Enhanced 1:1 Learning Management June 3, 2010

One of the key components we are planning for our 1:1 project is the open source learning management system “Moodle.”  Mark McCall with Remote Learner taught at Stephen F. Austin Middle School in Bryan, Texas and started our training on last Tuesday by sharing how he used Moodle to help that school’s 1:1 implementation succeed.  He came to provide training for not just Del Crest Middle School where the 1:1 will be implemented in the fall, but for all our power users of what we call the Learning Portal.  I have to admit that even though I was sold on Moodle before, I am even more convinced of the usefulness of this kind of tool.  Here are the top five reasons we talked about in the training so far with two days of training to go:
  1. Flexible configuration the Project Based Approach — Students can “turn in” a YouTube video and a teacher can grade it, and record a grade.
  2. A single set of processes common to all students and teachers — For kids sake don’t have 8 processes to learn to satisfy 8 different people.
  3. Ability for multiple roles involves students in roles beyond the traditional passive role — the quiet kids can lead, too.
  4. Forums are friendly to the classroom — We can publish to the world or privately between teacher and student.
  5. Allow parents to have mentor accounts — We believe the parents must be partners in guiding the student in digital learning.

This blog was created in June 2010 to facilitate idea sharing among schools implementing mobile learning projects. These include 1:1 learning projects with laptops as well as other mobile devices, including iPod Touches, smartphones, etc. Our Storychasers leadership team recognizes several things with respect to blogging and idea sharing:

If you would like to participate and share ideas here, you have several options. These are currently being updated (we’ll have them live by Friday, June 3rd) and are listed on our blog About page.
